What is Type 2 Diabetes and How is it Treated?

The most common type of diabetes is Type 2 diabetes, a condition in which the body does not produce the proper amount of insulin, or the insulin is ignored by the body's cells. This type of diabetes is often diagnosed in adulthood, unlike Type 1 diabetes which is often diagnosed in childhood. This type of diabetes can sometimes be prevented with proper diet and exercise. If you are diagnosed with this condition, don't worry. There are ways you can effectively manage your diabetes and keep yourself healthy.

Testing your blood sugar is of extreme importance. There are various times you will need to do this. Fasting blood sugar levels are taken first thing in the morning before any food is consumed. Then you will also want to test your blood sugar levels after meals and snacks. If you experience any hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia symptoms, you will need to test at that time as well. Your doctor will inform you of what your levels should be, and what readings mean your blood sugar is too low of high. Testing is performed with the use of a diabetic test kit.

There are different kinds of test kits on the market today. Some use digital technology for the clearest readouts possible, while others change color to indicate blood glucose levels. Most test kits come complete with a monitoring device, test strips and a lancet or needle for blood collection. Some diabetics will also need to test ketones in the urine with a different type of testing kit. If you're unsure of what supplies you need, ask your doctor. It's important to keep supplies on hand at all times, whether you're at home, school or work.

People with Type 2 diabetes should pay close attention to their diet and level of exercise. A diet low in fat and calories combined with regular exercise can go a long way towards the effective management of diabetes and overall health. It's important for everyone, especially diabetics, to consume healthy food choices and get enough activity. When you eat, and how much you eat can also factor in. Diabetics are often directed to eat small amounts of healthy foods on a regular basis to keep blood sugar levels stable. Working with a dietician can be very helpful for diabetics when it comes to implementing the most effective nutritional plan possible.
