How to Recognize Diabetes Symptoms

Diabetes is a serious illness in which the proper amount of insulin is not produced or used properly by the body. There are two different types of diabetes, called Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 diabetes used to be called juvenile diabetes because it is most commonly diagnosed during childhood. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type and is most commonly diagnosed during adulthood. With proper diet and exercise, Type 2 diabetes can sometimes be prevented. The causes of this disease are not fully understood but it's thought that genetics and weight may be factors. It's important for everyone to know how to recognize diabetes symptoms for the purposes of early detection and treatment.

Frequent urination, excessive thirst, and weight loss are common symptoms of diabetes. They are not the only symptoms, however. Less common symptoms of diabetes include unexplained fatigue, blurred vision, dry mouth, male impotence, female yeast infections, and otherwise unspecified aches and pains. Some people have lots of telltale symptoms, others do not. If you exhibit any symptoms, the best course of action is to visit your doctor to obtain a proper diagnosis.

During your diabetes screening, you may be asked to give both urine and blood at different intervals. Fasting blood sugar will be taken before any food or drink is consumed. Your doctor may also want to test your blood sugar after eating or drinking as well. A fasting blood sugar level between 80 and 110 is favorable, while levels above 125 are indicative of diabetes. Your test results will be evaluated by your doctor and explained to you in detail.

After your diabetes symptoms are evaluated and a diagnosis is reached, you may be wondering what happens next. If you are deemed a diabetic, you will be taught how to manage your condition. Testing your blood sugar may be uncomfortable at first, but the more often you do it the easier it will be. Diabetic supplies that you may need include a testing kit, lancet, insulin delivery device and glucose capsules. Your doctor will tell you what supplies you need to manage your diabetes and how to use them. Diet and exercise are other considerations that are very important for diabetics to address. Proper medical guidance and self-care can go a long way towards helping you effectively manage your condition now and for years to come.
